What to know about Indonesian transcription

  • Indonesian and Malay are close but have their own codes: id for Indonesian and ms for Malay. Choose by the variety your speakers use.
  • Informal Indonesian (bahasa gaul) and regional languages such as Javanese (jw) or Sundanese (su) mix into everyday speech. Send the language that dominates.
  • Reduplicated words are written with a hyphen (anak-anak). Keep hyphens when you tokenize.
